Wanting to start numismatic collecting
I am big into just bullion Silver. I am very young and wanting to get into 1 series of coins that isnt too expensive to start into but also should go up a lot in value over the years. I thought about starting the 3 cent nickle series but the mintage level of some of those coins is really low! I would like any input of what coin i should start collecting.
Thanks |

I am not that knowledgeable about "numismatics" but if I was getting into it I would get Morgan Silver dollars as close to spot as you can without getting those crummy worn ones. The kind in this picture would be great if you can get them near spot Silver. |

It depends on your interests. The three cent nickel is a cool coin. I like it, but I have only one. This is the best advice I can give, whatever coin you choose to collect, buy it in the highest grade you can afford. Also, if you can, buy them in the same grade. An evenly matched set will sell for more than one that is not. I cannot tell you how many complete collections I have looked at that have the common dates in MS (mint state) condition and the rarer coins in G (good) condition. It looks silly. Lastly, a lot of beginners will sacrifice grade for quantity. You want to see the stash grow fast. If you want to do this, do what Naccarato suggests and buy some worn silver dollars at or below spot and play with those. The Great Ag |

I like Walking Liberty half dollars. I think they are the prettiest U.S. coin ever made for circulation. :9536:

Nothing to worn, AU coins could be had for close to spot. |

Sweet pic, Naccarato!
That Morgan is in XF condition probably 45 or so. From PCGS official guide to coin grading and counterfeit detection Quote:

That's not my coin Great Ag, stole the picture from e-bay. But soon I am going to try to take a nice picture of my best condition Morgan.

Re: Wanting to start numismatic collecting
Good advice already, pick something that interests you.
I love Morgans. The history is fantastic. Either way , I think you are starting at a good time. Numismatics has cycles , like anything else. My gut tells me that we are going to see a wave of interest in numismatic concerns , even a bubble. Search Morgans and you'll see Ho , or others have made great recommendations for resources to get started. Good luck. |

Don't forget about "numismatic" 10 ounce bars, Highroller. |
Re: Wanting to start numismatic collecting
I think Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the Great Coins of the late 19th and early twentieth centuries.
Here's a great resource book: http://www.amazon.com/Buyers-Silver-...0660341&sr=8-1 Maranatha, P.S. My very first coin was a Morgan Dollar given to me by a Great Uncle back in the late '50's. I've been hooked ever since. |
Re: Wanting to start numismatic collecting
I'd go with the Liberty Nickel collection. It's an easy collection to finish until you get to the very last one. That's the one you buy after your silver bullion goes Jason Hommel parabolic in price at the very end of this silver bull market. Of course I'm referring to the one that I, like most collectors are missing, which is the 1913. In any event, the Liberty Nickel Collection is one that always leaves you with some other coin to strive for, so you'll never feel unchallenged to complete it. Moreover, the 1912-s is one of the best-known investment vehicles in non-silver/gold, non-error, rare 20th century, circulating US coins.

Is that ten ounce bar you have pictured numismatic?? Because i believe i have ten of them or so that i bought as generics |
Re: Wanting to start numismatic collecting
Thanks for everyones input. However I do not wish to collect silver dollars.
Ag and Master Ho that is very good advice except i have one problem. ALL coins intrest me : ) One of my main concerns is the potential growth in value. Belive me im going to love searching for the coins I chose but i also want my work to pay off. Im still thinking the 3 cent nickle or the shield nickle, but i just dont know. Someone told me that i should start getting the silver roosevelt dime collection. But i just dont see that being worth that much more than silver price in 20 some years. I would like to be able to build a better collection and not junk. It will cost more but it will look a lot better |

Collect what YOU like. (personally I like coins with to do with sports and specifically the Olympics) If it never goes up in value, you are still happy to look at a collection that YOU like. As said before, collect in the highest graded coins you can afford. and try to keep them in the same graded condition if possible.
On the other hand...if you really know what you are doing and doing it for strictly speculative investment purposes, that's a different story. Here is a picture of one of my favorite sets. Now this set has three things that drive it's value. 1. Nuisimatic 2. Silver content 3. Currency exchange |
Re: Wanting to start numismatic collecting
HI HighRoller
sorry i have to go alittle against everyone but i think if u want to make the most money and you think silver will go parabolic in price then keep buying Bullion or i suppose anything as close to spot. if the price goes parabolic silver will be traded at melt less likely at a premium. if u want something to look at get it.(but i think numismatics do better then bullion in a bear market) i know bullion is not much to look at but gota love the weight :) |
